The national Projunior champions, the competition for surfers up to 20 years, were decided at the Ocean Spirit Festival. Tomás Fernandes from Ericeira and Carol Henrique from Cascais won the stage. They also devote themselves to national champions in small waves but with proper training in Santa Cruz. For our surf house in Portugal, it was a joy to see these young surfers.
In the male, especially João Kopke, Guilherme Fonseca and Luis Perloiro that were winning all the heats with enough authority to the final. All sought victory in steps towards the league title. Departing for this race, Tomás Fernandes was still in the lead after winning the first leg in Porto, but the surfer from Ericeira was being surprised during the various elimination rounds having finished in 2nd place in both the quarter-final as the semi-final in heats won by Pedro Coelho and Guilherme Fonseca, respectively.
We were delighted to see these young surfers at our surf house in Portugal
The final 30 minutes started and ended with Thomas in front but this suffered «attacks» to his leadership mainly by Guilherme. In the end, João Kopke still managed to reach the second position (12.90 points) thus leaving Guilherme in third place (11.75 points) and Luís Perloiro fourth (8:50 points).
The surfer from Ericeira that ended with 14:25 points commented that «I could not be happier to have won at this stage to consecrate myself as national two time champion in my last year as a junior. I"m so very motivated for the next stage of the circuit, the US Open of Surfing in California, where my goal is to keep me in the top 100».
With the ladies, the story was different. Mariana Assis, Cascais, had won the first leg but was surprised in the semi-finals by Carol Henry, also of Cascais, and Agnes Bishop of Costa de Caparica, having failed to reach the final and thus being brushed off the national title. Carol thus began her journey towards her first national title, having not given any room to her opponents throughout the final.
Projunior 2015 was a great success for surf in Portugal
Camilla Kemp in second (8 points), Mariana Garcia in third (6.75 points) and Agnes Bishop was in fourth place (6.40 points). Carol obtained a total of 10.90 points and said «I am very pleased to have achieved a national champion Projunior and want to thank all my supporters I have from friends, family and also my sponsors. I will continue to train to grow more as a surfer!»
So yet another national circuit Projunior comes to an end with all normality. The National Association of surfers and Pure Wave - Event Production congratulates all surfers, especially the national Tomás Fernandes and Carol Henry champions, wishing much success to their careers in Surfing. Our surf house in Portugal was very pleased with this contest.
The Projunior 2015 is organized by the National Association of surfers and Pure Wave, sponsored by the Municipality of Porto, Municipality of Torres Vedras, the media partners GO-S.TV, SurfPortugal, ONFIRE, Beachcam, and technical support from the Portuguese Surfing Federation.
